Late summer can create a lot of stress on your landscaping, especially the grass. This time of year, lawn care is all about keeping grass healthy (and alive) while temperatures soar. But, it’s not just the summer heat grass has to contend with. Summertime means outdoor lunches, company picnics, and lots of growing weeds from summer showers.
Here are some tips for keeping the lawn in tiptop shape during hot summer days.
- Water Wisely – Lawns need at least one inch of water a week, even more when the heat is severe. But make sure to water before the sun rises, or very early in the day to reduce evaporation and fungal growth.
- Mow Frequently – This is the time of year to speak to your lawn service about mowing more often. Mowing regularly prevents cutting more than 1/3 of the grass blade at a time, which keeps the grass healthier and prevents the clippings from smothering the grass. And make sure to ask that them to keep the mower’s blades sharp, so it isn’t tearing up the grass.
- Don’t Over Fertilize – Resist the urge to fertilize, even if the lawn is looking a little sad. Applying extra fertilizer in the heat of summer can burn the lawn and create a flush of tender growth that will struggle in the hot summer weather.
