There’s something so nice about a lush, green lawn. Of course as any landscaper will tell you, a healthy lawn doesn’t just happen. Aside from the regular maintenance, success with your lawn depends on many things. And the most important one among them is choosing the proper type of grass.
Making grass choices is not something we often consider, but we actually have many choices in South Florida. If you are thinking of laying sod at your property, here are 6 great options:
- St. Augustine Grass (stenotaphrum secundatum) is a South Florida favorite because it establishes quickly, thrives in warm climates, and can tolerate high levels of salt. It is not however, a fan of persistent shade.
- Bermuda Grass (cynodon dactylon) is most commonly used on sports fields and golf courses. It’s incredibly resistant to drought, weeds and high traffic. However, it’s also highly invasive, and sensitive to pests and shade.
- Bahiagrass (paspalum notatum) is another popular choice down here because of its ability to grow in less fertile sandy soils. It doesn’t require a lot of fertilizer or irrigation, which makes it an excellent choice for properties on large lots.
- Centipede Grass (eremochloa ophiuroides) is a low-growing grass that does not require a lot of mowing, making it ideal for property owners who want a low maintenance lawn. Centipede grass grows well in the sun and the shade, but it can’t handle a lot of traffic or salt.
- Buffalo Grass (bouteloua dactyloides) grows well in high temperatures, and all different types of soil. But it’s not tolerant of shade or high traffic areas.
- Zoysia Grass (zoysia) is a densely soft option. It grows well in the sun, can handle lots of traffic, and partial shade.
You probably didn’t realize you had so many options, but, as you can see, choosing the perfect grass for your property may not be as simple as you thought. If you’re having trouble deciding, or would like an expert opinion before making a decision, give us a call.
